Scale (calcium deposits) silently destroys coffee machines: slow flows, weak espresso, and false pressure readings are almost always scale. Descaling is the single most important home maintenance task.
This guide covers the when, the what product, and step-by-step descaling for both semi-automatic and bean-to-cup machines.
How often
Descale every 2-3 months as a default, or more often with hard water. Many machines (e.g. Philips with AquaClean, Jura) prompt you with a counter.
Signs you are overdue: slow flow, noisy pump, weak espresso, or a descale light that is impossible to ignore.
Which descaler
Use the brand recommended descaler where possible (Nespresso, Jura, De'Longhi each sell their own). Generic citric-acid descalers work but can be more aggressive on gaskets.
Never use vinegar in a boiler machine — it leaves a corrosive residue and can void the warranty.
The method
1) Empty the reservoir and fill with descaler solution. 2) Run cycles through the group/steam according to the manual (half the tank). 3) Leave 15-30 minutes to soak. 4) Finish with fresh water through two full cycles to flush thoroughly.
For bean-to-cup machines, most include a programmatic descale routine — follow the on-screen steps exactly.
