Scale is the silent enemy of every coffee machine — it builds up in boilers, blocks valves and quietly ruins both the machine and the taste of your coffee without any visible warning.
Here are the five early signs that your machine is overdue for a descale, before the problem becomes expensive.
Slower or visibly thinner shots
When the water flow slows or the espresso runs thin and pale despite the right grind, scale is often clogging the group and boiler. This is the most common early warning.
Longer warm-up and louder boiler
Scale insulates the heating element, so the machine takes longer to reach temperature and the boiler sounds noisier or rattles as it heats through a scaled layer.
Chalky or bitter taste out of nowhere
Scale changes water chemistry and can impart a flat, chalky bitterness you cannot fix by changing beans. If flavour suddenly shifts for no reason, suspect scale before you blame the roaster.
Steam wand sputters or steams weakly
A scaled steam system produces weak, sputtering or low-pressure steam — a sign the wand and boiler are partly blocked and overdue for a descale.
Error lights or blinking warnings
Many machines (especially bean-to-cup) track brew-count and light a descale warning automatically. When that lamp comes on, take it seriously — ignoring it accelerates the other four symptoms.
