Our Verdict

The OXO Brew 9-Cup is the cheapest machine that brews genuinely to specialty standards: SCA-certified temperatures, a rainmaker shower head that saturates evenly, and a double-wall thermal carafe — all controlled by a single knob. It's specialty coffee's best entry-level appliance.

Pros & Cons

What we love

  • SCA-certified brewing at a mainstream price
  • Single-dial interface — genuinely intuitive
  • Thermal carafe with clever brew-through lid
  • Compact footprint for a full-size brewer

What could be better

  • No manual control over any brew variable
  • Small-batch (2–4 cup) mode is good, not great
  • Carafe pour spout dribbles if rushed

Performance Testing

Blind against the Moccamaster with the same beans, the OXO landed within a whisker: slightly less sparkle on light roasts, otherwise the same sweet, properly-extracted profile that makes cheap brewers taste hollow by comparison. The rainmaker head leaves a flat, evenly-extracted bed — the tell of good engineering. Nine cups in about seven minutes, into a carafe that held 170°F+ for two hours.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Daily rinse of basket and carafe, monthly deep-clean of the carafe interior, prompted descaling. The flat-top design collects nothing; it's an easy machine to keep nice.

Who It's Best For

First 'real' coffee maker buyers, wedding registries, and anyone who wants specialty-grade drip without thinking about a single variable.

How It Compares

OXO Brew 9-Cup vs Technivorm Moccamaster KBGV

The Moccamaster brews faster and will outlive it, at $160 more; in the cup they're closer than the prices suggest.

OXO Brew 9-Cup vs Bonavita Connoisseur

Similar price and philosophy; the OXO adds a timer and sleeker design, the Bonavita counters with a one-touch pre-infusion mode.

Frequently Asked Questions

9-cup or OXO's 12-cup?

The 9-cup is the SCA-certified sweet spot with the thermal carafe; the 12-cup adds capacity and a glass-carafe option for bigger households.

Can I program it the night before?

Yes — the 24-hour timer via the single dial is one of the least annoying scheduling interfaces we've used.

Why does SCA certification matter at this price?

Because almost nothing under $200 hits 197°F+ consistently — and water temperature is the main reason budget drip tastes thin and sour.
