Our Verdict
Not quite pour over, not quite press — the AeroPress is its own category and possibly the best $50 in coffee. Pressure-assisted immersion brews a clean, full, endlessly tweakable cup in 90 seconds, survives any backpack, and cleans itself in the act of ejecting the puck. The Clear adds a Tritan crystal body to the classic formula.

Pros & Cons
What we love
- Fastest quality brew in the manual arsenal
- Absurd recipe flexibility — 90,000 championship variations exist
- Self-cleaning: eject puck, rinse, done
- Indestructible travel companion
What could be better
- One cup at a time, ~10oz ceiling
- Paper micro-filters strip some body (metal filters available)
- 'Espresso' claims are optimistic — it's a strong concentrate
Performance Testing
The AeroPress's pressure finish extracts what immersion alone leaves behind: our standard recipe (17g, 240ml, 90 seconds, firm press) produced a cup with pour-over clarity and press-pot roundness simultaneously. Dial it tight (fine grind, 50ml) and the concentrate makes credible flat whites. It is the single most forgiving quality brewer we test — nearly impossible to make undrinkable coffee with.
Cleaning & Maintenance
The best in all of coffee: the plunger squeegees the chamber as it ejects the puck into the bin. A two-second rinse finishes the job. This is not an exaggeration; it's the whole cult's origin story.
Who It's Best For
Travelers, offices, one-cup households, recipe tinkerers, and anyone who wants maximum cup quality per dollar and per minute.
How It Compares
AeroPress Clear vs Hario V60 02
The V60 edges it on absolute clarity; the AeroPress wins on speed, forgiveness and portability.
AeroPress Clear vs Espro P7
The Espro serves multiple cups with press body; the AeroPress is the superior solo instrument.
Frequently Asked Questions
Original, Clear, or XL?
Functionally identical brews; Clear is prettier, XL brews ~20oz for two. The $40 original remains the value king.
What's the inverted method?
Brewing upside-down to control drawdown timing. Fun, marginal, and largely obsoleted by the flow-control cap accessory.
Can it really make espresso?
No — 0.5 bar vs. 9. But its concentrate over hot milk makes the best 'latte' available for $50 of equipment.
