Every brewing method on earth is a variation on three physics: soak the grounds (immersion), flow water through them (percolation), or force it through under pressure. Map those to taste and effort, and choosing your method takes five minutes.

The three families

Immersion โ€” grounds steep in all the water, then separate: French press, cold brew, cupping. Full body, muted acidity, maximum forgiveness. Percolation โ€” water passes once through a bed: pour over, drip machines, moka pot (steam-driven). Clarity, brightness, more technique-sensitivity. Pressure โ€” 9 bars in 30 seconds: espresso, and its little cousin the AeroPress (hybrid immersion-pressure). Concentration, crema, intensity.

Choosing by the person you are

Want ritual and nuance โ†’ pour over. Want rich and easy โ†’ press. Want one cup, fast, excellent โ†’ AeroPress. Want a carafe while you shower โ†’ drip. Want lattes โ†’ espresso (or moka + frother on a budget). Want summer in a glass โ†’ cold brew. There are no wrong answers, only wrong matches โ€” the person who hates fuss should never own a V60, and the tinkerer will be bored by a pod machine in a week.

The universal upgrades

Whatever method you pick: fresh beans (roast date under 3 weeks), a burr grinder, weighed ratios and decent water improve it more than any brewer swap. Method chooses the character; those four choose the quality.
