Our Verdict

The Appartamento distills Milanese café engineering into a 10-inch-wide package: E61 grouphead, 1.8L copper heat-exchange boiler, hand-polished panels with signature cutout circles. It brews and steams simultaneously, sounds like a café, and looks like furniture. This is the machine people stop upgrading at.

Pros & Cons

What we love

  • Simultaneous brew and steam — real café workflow
  • E61 group: passive pre-infusion, endless accessories, fully serviceable
  • Breathtaking build quality and finish
  • Steam power for back-to-back milk drinks

What could be better

  • 25-minute warm-up (put it on a smart plug)
  • No PID; HX flush routine required for temperature control
  • Vibratory pump louder than rotary rivals

Performance Testing

After a cooling flush, the Appartamento held group temperature beautifully through a six-drink brunch service — something no single boiler can attempt. Shots are classically Italian: syrupy, chocolate-forward, with the E61's gentle pre-infusion smoothing over minor prep sins. Steam textured 6oz of milk in 15 seconds. The learning curve is the HX flush; master it in a week and consistency is superb.

Cleaning & Maintenance

Backflush weekly, lubricate the E61 cam twice a year, descale based on water hardness — E61 maintenance is ritualistic but every procedure is documented across 20 years of community guides. Panels wipe to a mirror.

Who It's Best For

Serious home baristas making multiple milk drinks daily who want commercial workflow, heirloom build quality and a machine with genuine soul.

How It Compares

Rocket Appartamento vs Rancilio Silvia M

The Silvia costs half as much but makes you choose between brewing and steaming; the Rocket does both at once.

Rocket Appartamento vs La Marzocco Linea Micra

The Micra adds dual boilers, PID precision and app control for ~$1,600 more — the rational endgame vs. the romantic one.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a cooling flush and is it annoying?

You run 2–4 seconds of water through the group before brewing to shed excess HX heat. It becomes muscle memory within days.

How loud is the vibratory pump?

Noticeably louder than a rotary machine — a 25-second espresso-machine buzz. The Appartamento TCA variant offers quieter operation.

Is the Appartamento worth it over the Breville Dual Boiler?

On specs, no — the Breville has PID and dual boilers for less. On build, serviceability, steam feel and 20-year ownership, the Rocket makes its case.
