Limescale is the leading cause of espresso machine death — it strangles flow, blankets heating elements and eventually clogs boilers solid. Descaling is cheap, easy insurance. Here's the how, the how-often, and the important exceptions.
What scale is and why it kills machines
Hard water carries dissolved calcium and magnesium; heat precipitates them as rock inside your boiler and tubes. Symptoms of buildup: slower flow, weaker steam, temperature drift, white crust at the steam tip, and eventually a machine that hums but won't pump. By then you're chipping at geology.

The procedure (typical semi-automatic)
Use a citric-acid-based espresso descaler (Urnex Dezcal or your manufacturer's own — not vinegar, which is weak against scale, taints seals, and voids some warranties). Dissolve per instructions in a full tank. Run a third through the group and steam wand, rest 15–20 minutes, run the remainder through in stages. Then flush two full tanks of fresh water through every path. Super-automatics (Magnifica Evo and kin) have guided cycles — just obey the prompts with real descaler.
When NOT to descale
Machines with water softening handled (Jura's CLEARYL, Breville filters used with soft water) may specify never descaling manually — forcing it can dislodge chunks into valves. And prosumer machines with brass boilers (E61 machines) deserve a service-oriented approach; aggressive DIY descaling of a badly scaled HX can create leaks. Know your machine's doctrine.
Don't confuse scale with coffee oils
Descaler removes minerals; it does nothing for rancid coffee residue — that's backflushing with detergent, a separate, equally mandatory chore. Machines need both, on different clocks. The full maintenance schedule puts every task on a calendar.
